A sharp knife is an essential tool for any chef. Being able to cut quickly and accurately is not only convenient but also safer than using a blunt knife, which is more prone to slipping. A honing steel is a simple and easy-to-use tool that can restore the factory-fresh edge of your knives, but it's important to remember that it does not actually sharpen the blade.
The honing steel works by realigning the blade, smoothing out the kinks and dents that occur from everyday use, and giving the knife a straight cutting edge once again. This is in contrast to a sharpening steel, which removes material from the knife to restore the V-shape of the edge. A sharpening steel can be used to sharpen knives that have become blunt over time, while a honing steel is used to restore the bent edge without removing any metal from the blade.
To use a honing steel effectively, start by bracing the steel on a solid surface, such as a chopping board on a kitchen counter, and hold it vertically in your non-dominant hand. With your dominant hand, hold the knife against the steel, as close to the handle as possible, and twist the blade so it's at around a 20-degree angle away from the steel. Then, using gentle pressure, draw the blade down and away from the steel, allowing the edge to run along and down the steel from the part nearest the handle to the tip. Repeat this process on the opposite side of the blade, and four or five strokes on each side should be sufficient to realign the edge.
If your pruners have lost their edge or have become rusty and stiff, our Pruning Tool Sharpener can restore them to like-new condition. This simple and easy-to-use sharpener will quickly put a smooth, sharp edge on your blades in just a few minutes, whether it's a serrated knife, craft scissors, or garden pruners.
The honing steel helps regain the cutting power of your knives by realigning the microscopic edge of metal, allowing it to cut through food more efficiently. The 12-inch honing steel and ergonomic, slip-resistant handle make it easy and safe to use, while the diamond coating helps restore the original sharpness of your kitchen knives. Additionally, the included pruner sharpener is designed for sharpening a variety of garden tools, including secateurs, grafting knives, loppers, and even lawn mower blades.
To keep your honing steel clean and well-maintained, simply wipe it with a dry cloth after each use. Avoid putting it in the dishwasher, and store it in a cool, dry place.
